Según el productor y relacionista público William Lucas, el éxito de la banda radica mucho en el objetivo al que va dirigido, la juventud: ese mercado muy consumista (CD, compras on-line, etc.). Son los muchachos, dice, los más empeñosos en ver de cerca a sus ídolos.
Las melodías del grupo, One Thing o What Makes You Beautiful, tienen cientos de millones de visitas en YouTube y según un reporte de Google, 3,35 millones de personas están tras su pista cada mes. No conformes con su éxito musical, ellos también han publicado hasta la fecha tres libros: Forever Young: Our Official X Factor Story, The Official Annual 2012 y Dare to Dream: Life as One Direction.
La imagen de “chicos buenos” que proyectan en su profesión puede distorsionarse por la realidad de algunos de sus miembros. La revista Rolling Stone afirma que la banda se sostiene de su “poder vocal y de su carisma” para mantener su base de fieles fans, un frente que espera disfrutar del segundo álbum de la banda, Take Me Home, que ya está disponible para preventa y que será presentado el próximo 13 de noviembre.
“Los fans se sienten más cerca, es una relación que se vuelve fiel y directa. Ahora las personas pueden comunicarse a tiempo real con otras que están al otro lado del mundo (twitcam). Eso es una bendición para nosotros los artistas”, expresa Cordero respecto a la importancia de las redes sociales en la vida de los famosos.
En Radio Disney, One Direction se mantiene con sus melodías en el ranking de las 50 canciones más pedidas. El grupo, según un reporte, ocupó el noveno lugar con What Makes You Beautiful el fin de semana pasado. Radio Alfa, por su parte, emitió hace quince días un especial dedicado a la banda. Fernando Heredia, programador del dial, indica que One Direction lleva con sus melodías casi dos meses en el ranking de los 20 temas más solicitados.
Dos grupos de fans afincados en Guayaquil, Ecuador Loves One Direction y Ecuador One Direction Fannys, coinciden en que la banda les impactó tanto por el físico de los chicos como por su música.
